A few years later, Milne would return to these experiments.

In April 1923, Milne went back to the Adirondacks seeking work as a sign maker. A month later, husband and wife were back at the tea house. That summer, two high school girls were hired as waitresses, but this meant that Patsy had to do all the baking and cooking. Patsy also made and sold decorated cushions; the Midjos visited in September.

At this time, two types of paintings preoccupied Milne. The new oils were forceful images in which the landscapes occupy the picture area with a stolid majesty new in Milne’s work. This can be seen in Waterfall, Adirondacks, where the power of the surging water is vividly suggested. There are also somewhat minimalist watercolour landscapes making abundant use of the white on the paper surface.
